Belgian unions start strike to keep electricity company public

(29 May 2006) A Belgian municipal company has announced to establish a private sector umbrella to be active on the power market. The unions, EPSU affiliates CGSP, CSC-Services Publics and SLPF have proposed a public sector alternative. This has been rejected. The implication of the private sector solution is that the public service will no longer be democratically controlled but left to share holders, that 70 years of public sector experience and assets are swindled and that the statute of the workers will be changed. The unions have started a strike for an undefined period to influence the decision of the municipality. EPSU has sent the unions a message of support.
