EPSU Bulgarian unions stage national demo on wage rights

Sofia, 30 May 2006

(Sofia, 30 May)
EPSU Bulgarian affiliates of CITUB are today organising a National Demonstration in Sofia under the motto "To bring hope back - we will no longer bear poverty and humiliation!"

The reason for this demonstration is the lack of effective dialogue with employers and government on income policy. Specifically, demo organisers wish to highlight the violations by authorities of the constitutional right to strike, particularly in the fields of healthcare, telecommunications, energy and transport. Several months before the accession of Bulgaria to the EU, the income of the Bulgarian workers ranks among the lowest in Europe. This low ranking is significant in that it has come about despite sustained economic growth over the last 3-4 years. Yet rather than seize this opportunity to align wage rates with general economic growth, the Bulgarian Government has accelerated the pace of attacks against labour legislation.
