Regions plan further cuts

Spain

The FSC-CCOO services federation has attacked the planned cuts announced by the Catalonian regional government on 30 November, saying that the cuts to pay, employment and working conditions will mean undoing 30 years of progress. Cuts in staff could mean the termination of contracts of temporary workers who make up 25%-30% of all regional government employees. The union also points out that this means an attack on collective bargaining and the collective agreements that have been signed in recent years. Meanwhile in Castilla La Mancha the regional government plans to increase weekly working hours for its 70,000 public sector employees from 35 to 37.5 while reducing pay by 3%.

Union will mobilise against region's plans for cuts

The vpod public services union is planning to mobilise against the plans by the Geneva regional authority to implement deep cuts in public spending. The union argues that these measures are an attack on public sector workers as well as citizens and will seriously undermined public services. Among the many proposed changes to workers' conditions are a two-hour increase in the working week and weaker job protection rules. Unions angered by further cuts

The CGIL trade union confederation has called a general strike for 6 September to demonstrate its opposition to the latest government plans to cut public spending and raise taxes on income rather than wealth. The measures pose further threats to workers’ pay and conditions with later retirement, more flexibility in labour contracts and the possibility of further privatization and liberalization. Nurses plan further action

Ireland

The INO nurses' union and Psychiatric Nurses' Association are planning to continue action in support of their claim for higher pay and shorter working hours. The unions expressed disappointment that health service employers failed to respond to the unions' willingness to negotiate over far-reaching modernisation as part of a deal over working time. Meanwhile the SIPTU general union confirms its support for the claim for shorter working hours although it is not involved in the current industrial action.
