Union attacks plan for increased pension age for health and social care workers

The GÖD has criticised proposals to increase the retirement age in the health and social care sector. Johann Hable, chair of the health section, pointed out that workers in the sector face shift work, night work and unsocial hours and few even reach the current retirement age. Getting health workers to work longer would increase the risk of burn-out. Instead the union wants to see employers take initiatives to support older workers such as part-time work on full pay, paid rest time and fitness programmes.

Health union vows to challenge pension age increase

At a meeting on 22 October the health workers' union confirmed its opposition to the government's pensions reforms and said it would fight to restore the right to early retirement for health workers. The reforms, including raising the pension age to 65, have met with widespread opposition across the trade union movement not just over the measures themselves but also the way the government introduced them with little or no consultation. The law takes effect from 1 January 2019 and the health workers' union is considering legal action to challenge the changes to early retirement rights.

Strike against increase in pension age

The FGTB/ABVV socialist union federation called a one-day general strike on Friday 7 October in protest at the government plans to cut back on early retirement so that workers will have to retire at 60 rather than have the option of retiring at 58. The Christian and Liberal union federations were still seeking further negotiations and although they didn't join the strike call did express support for any joint action at local level. Childcare workers mobilise over pension age increase

The SOMK education, culture and media union organised demonstrations in Zagreb and Rijeka to protest against plans to raise the retirement age for childcare workers from 65 to 67. The union argues that the change fails to recognise the nature of work in the sector and the increasing mental and physical demands made on childcare workers. EPSU sent a message of solidarity as did the BDDSz childcare workers from Hungary.
