Union focuses on pay rise and fair pay in meeting with government

Around 150 trade unionists from the health sector attended a meeting with the Prime Minister and Health Minister organised by the OSZSP trade union. The main focus of the meeting was on pay and concerns expressed by the union about the many health workers who do the same job but are on different rates of pay. OSZSP also wants a guarantee from the government that it will honour the agreement to pay all health workers a 10% increase in January 2019. It is worried about statements from the Health Minister that the pay rise should be allocated differently. While welcoming the Prime Minister's suggestion that health spending should increase to 9% of GDP, the union underlined the need for urgent action to increase staffing across the sector.

Local government union focuses on pay and working time

The Kommunal municipal and health services union has set out some of the main demands that it will pursue in the upcoming collective bargaining with municipal employers. The union will aim for a 3% general pay rise with an extra 0.5% to be used at local level for specific groups of vocationally trained workers in health, child and other care. It wants vocationally trained temporary workers to be offered a permanent contract after 12 months and is calling for a number of measures on working time. Unions launch fair pay fortnight

Unions across the UK in both public and private sectors are involved in a two-week period of campaigning to argue the case for fair pay for workers. The TUC confederation says that on average workers have lost but £4000 (€4800) a year since 2009 as pay has been eroded by inflation and many workers are stuck in low paid and insecure jobs. Part of the campaign involves a petition to political parties calling for a pay rise, a higher minimum wage as well as negotiated living wages and an end to the pay freeze in the public sector.
