Nov. 07, 2019 On 29 October thousands of people took part in a protest rally outside parliament to call for urgent action in the education sector. The demonstration was supported by EPSU affiliate the Trade Union of the National Ukrainian Academy of Science. The wide range of demands included a call for an increase in education spending to 7% of GDP, implementation of approved pay scales and an increase in the sector minimum wage and action to prevent teacher dismissals, transfer to fixed-term contracts and increases in working hours.

Jul. 25, 2019 The FPU trade union confederation has rejected a call from the World Bank that there should be no further increases in the minimum wage until structural reforms have been carried out. The FPU argues strongly that a decent minimum wage is a basic right for workers and shouldn't be subordinated to the demands of international creditors. The current minimum wage is 5500 UAH a month (EUR 195) and is set to rise to 5700 UAH (EUR 200). The confederation says that the minimum should be a living wage and on this basis the target should be UAH 7700 (EUR 270).
Jul. 11, 2019 Trade unions are highly critical of the government for planned measures that could see a 50% cut in district state administrations which could mean the dismissal of 27000 workers by January 2020. The unions say that there has been absolutely no consultation over the proposals, no review of local government services and no information provided on any possible social plan, (re)training initiatives or early retirement arrangements. The unions point out that there are few appropriate private sector job opportunities for many of the skilled workers who could be made redundant.
Mar. 27, 2019 At its meeting on 21 March, the central committee of the Nuclear Energy and Industry Workers’ Union (NEIWUU) protested about restructuring being carried out in the Chernobyl exclusion zone, where the authority responsible for the zone was taking decisions without consulting the union. The NEIWUU expressed concern about violations of social obligations that are stipulated by the sectoral agreement. The union also gave examples of staff relocations where it had to remind the authority that it had to consult with the union as required by the Labour Code. This was the sixth reform applied to workers in the zone and the NEIWUU says the authority has repeatedly ignored the union. The NEIWUU is also worried about commitments to increase wages and how this will be funded, with concerns that jobs will be cut if no additional funding is secured.

Nov. 23, 2018 The FPU trade union federation took part in a parliamentary hearing earlier this month to highlight the urgent need to protect basic trade union rights. The trade union representatives gave evidence of the attacks on trade unions, banning of trade union leaders from workplaces and attempts to seize trade union property by the authorities. The unions set out a range of demands to the committee including a law to protect trade union property, measures to underpin the right to strike and effective enforcement of the core ILO conventions on collective bargaining and freedom of association as well as extra funding in the 2019 budget for improved public services and increased pay for public service workers.
Oct. 26, 2018 On 17 October, around 20000 trade union members from both private and public sectors marched through Kyiv city centre and blocked the government quarter. The main demands of the demonstration were for investment in industry for decent jobs, raise the minimum wage to help stop emigration, not to increase utilities prices, for the state budget to allocate the equivalent of 7% of GDP to education and 5% to healthcare, to urgently pay outstanding wages to more than 100,000 workers and to stop state’s takeover of trade union property and respect trade union rights.
Aug. 31, 2018 Trade unions across the country are working together to resist state interference in trade union affairs and attempts to take over trade union property including offices and training centres. The latest incident occurred in the Zarpattia region in the west of the country where trade union activists from different sectors gathered at the entrance to the offices of the regional trade union council to physically resist attempts to take over the building by the authorities.
Jun. 29, 2018 The FPSU trade union confederation has called on the government to raise the minimum wage to keep it in line with calculations of a living wage. It argues that in 2017 the two-stage increase of the minimum wage to UAH 3200 (EUR 104) was positive for both the standard of living and economic growth. However, this January's increase to UAH 3723 (EUR 121) was inadequate to keep pace with the living wage which had already risen to UAH 4011 (EUR 130) and was at UAH 4213 (EUR 137) by April. According to the FPSU around 20% of workers are classified as poor and the average wage at EUR 262 is only slightly more than the lowest minimum wage in the EU (Bulgaria - EUR 261). The confederation says that it had secured a commitment for an increase of the minimum wage to UAH 4200 (EUR 136) in the second quarter of 2018 and the government needs to stand by that commitment.

Jan. 09, 2018 The Service and the State Employees’ Union of Ukraine (SEUU) has signed a new three-year agreement covering the protection of labour, social and economic rights of border guards. The agreement aims to improve working conditions, professional development, training and skills. It also covers health and safety, wages and working time. The SEUU sees this as an important agreement covering more than 7,000 workers in around 50 units.
