Pay deal will help reduce gender pay gap

(May 2016) Municipal workers' union, Kommunal, has negotiated a new three-year agreement covering the welfare sector that includes a real pay increase for all but a higher pay increase for skilled nurses. This is a key part of the union's strategy to tackle the gender pay gap. In 2016 the basic pay increase will be SEK 520 (EUR 56) while nurses will get SEK 2010 (EUR 110). The agreement also includes provisions to ensure that full-time employment is the norm in the sector. Read more at Kommunal (SV)

Co-ordinated action helps reduce gender pay gap

The latest wage report from the LO confederation concludes that a co-ordination of policies by its affiliates has delivered higher pay increases for women workers and a closing of the gender pay gap. However, on average among blue-collar workers men earn SEK 2,900 (€285) a month more than women. The report also notes that the average pay of blue-collar workers has increased at a much lower rate than white-collar workers over the last 10 years which means that the gap between the two has risen from 36% to 44%. Union calls for substantial pay boost to reduce the gender pay gap

The FOA public services union has called on the government to recognise the need for multi-billion kronor funding to make a real difference to pay in jobs dominated by women. The union points out that the last time that an attempt was made to tackle the problem was in the 2007 three-year agreement but in the end the extra funding to close the pay gap was spread too thinly across the public sector. The FOA wants to see extra funding earmarked for low paid jobs dominated by women and also changes to equality legislation.
