Free Turkish trade unionists inmediately! EPSU call for an immediate halt to trade union repression

(25 June 2014) We just got the worrying news that General Secretary of DISK, Ms. Arzu Çerkezoğlu was beaten and detained during a sit-in in front of the national parliament in Ankara. She has been put in custody. Ms. Cerkezoglu led a union action in support of trade union rights and against outsourcing in health services together with other members of the DISK health union Dev Sağlık-iş (Progressive Union of Health Workers - newly affiliated to EPSU and PSI).

After an attack by the riot police, 17 members of Dev Sağlık-İş, including its President Çerkezoğlu and General Secretary Gürsel Kaya, were beaten and detained. Two were badly injured and had to be hospitalized.

EPSU stands by its Turkish affiliates that are continuously harassed by the authorities. We demand the immediate release of the detainees. The European and International trade union movement keep up its pressure on the Turkish government to enforce full respect of human and trade rights in Turkey.
