Labour market policy network set up

A number of institutes across Europe have come together to provide an alternative view of economic policy. The European Labour Network on Economic Policy (ELNEP) will focus in particular on issues related to the labour market, employment, wages and income distribution. Wherever appropriate it will take a European, rather than national, perspective. ELNEP will challenge what has become almost a mainstream view of the importance of the supply side and the centrality of markets to the detriment of social policy. The network includes the ETUI-RHES European trade union institute plus a number of national bodies. The network will have its own website at: www.elnep.org

Unions set up youth network

Unions in the FNV federation have set up a youth network for members under 35. Two of the first initiatives of the network will be to train young members in negotiating improvements in working conditions and in campaigning for the right to be paid the national minimum wage at 18 years of age rather than at the current age of 23. Migrant care workers set up union network

RESPEKT@vpod is a new network for care and domestic workers set up in the VPOD public services union. Following VPOD's support of a Polish migrant worker who successfully secured compensation after being sacked for questioning her pay, the union was approached by many other migrant care workers seeking advice and information. RESPEKT@vpod is a response to these demands in a sector known for exploitative pay and employment conditions.
