Georgia: health unions fight hospital closures

Despite aggressive anti-union policies and legislation, health workers in Georgia are fighting back against the government's plans for widespread privatisation. A combination of cutbacks and a switch from public funding to an insurance-based system have combined to put tremendous pressure on health institutions with patients facing reduced services as well as charging. The Health, Pharmaceutical and Social Care Workers’ Independent Trade Union has been mobilising to expose the impact of the government's programme and to try to stop hospital closures and sell-offs.
