The GDG-KMSfB local and regional government union has taken a decision to authorise strike action following the refusal of the regional government in Lower Austria to negotiate over pay. The union has criticised Erwin Pröll, the regional government head, for effectively imposing a real wage cut on workers and for ignoring the 3000 demonstrators who joined a union protest back in September. The GDG says it has run out of patience waiting for a response from Pröll and is calling for fair negotiations over a reasonable pay rise for regional government employees for 2013 and 2014.

Union organises warning strikes in local and federal government
The ver.di service union has organised warning strikes to demonstrate to the local and federal government employers that workers in the sector want a reasonable pay offer. So far the employers have rejected ver.di’s demands in terms of both pay and other conditions. They are also refusing to reintroduce promotion opportunities that were suspended in 2005 at the time of the introduction of a new pay agreement. The 2005 agreement included a new pay structure but full implementation of this has not been negotiated and so the union is calling for at least the possibility of career progression. Ver
Warning strikes under way in federal and local government
Service union ver.di has launched warning strikes across federal and local government to put pressure on the employers following the second round of bargaining. The union reports that the two-day meeting was a waste of time with no offer from the employers and no real appreciation or recognition of the work done by public sector employees. The employers have indicated that they will come up with an offer before the next round of negotiations which are due on 22-23 October. Public sector unions warn of strike action
Unions across the public sector have warned the government of the possibility of all-out strike action unless it negotiates a deal over planned changes to pay and cuts in jobs. The government is responding to demands from the International Monetary Fund to reduce public spending and reform public sector pay as part of a loan package that was also negotiated with the European Union. The Sed Lex civil service union oragnised a demonstration outside parliament on 16 September and is gearing up for a public sector wide strike on 5 October.
