Doctors employed by the regional governments in Germany are continuing their protests over pay and working hours. Their union, the Marburger Bund, has organised a week of action beginning with a national demonstration on 5 August.

Pay and hours improvements for doctors
The GdG-KMSfB union has secure improvements in pay and rules around working time for doctors employed by the federation of health institutions in Vienna. There will be higher starting pay and increased annual leave for new starters which the union regards as crucial to make the job more attractive. There are other changes to working time to ensure that all time at work is paid and that any time worked above normal hours is paid as overtime, on the basis of a 40-hour week. Doctors organised in the Marburger Bund trade union, were on strike last month in protest at plans by their regional government employers to raise weekly working hours and cut Christmas and holiday bonuses. Doctors and nurses protest over pay
This year has seen continuing strikes and demonstrations over pay by doctors and nurses, as reported by the EIRO industrial relations observatory. Over 200 hospitals were hit by strike action over the summer, as doctors demanded a collective agreement. Nurses also staged widespread protests over low pay in the sector.
