Trade unions making the case for a social dimension to the Energy Union in a meeting with Vice-president Sefcovic

(28 November 2016) The European Commission “Energy winter package” is going to be released soon. The meeting was an opportunity to exchange views on the future of the EU energy union and to raise concerns regarding the lack of social dimension.

EPSU stressed the importance of addressing the employment consequences of the transition for workers in the energy sector. The European Commission has still not reacted to a joint letter of employers and trade unions requesting a social impact assessment of the new market design.

Energy poverty was also raised during the meeting. Regulated prices and prohibition of disconnections should be key policy measures to tackle this growing issue for European citizens.

The meeting took place 21 November 2016 in the European Commission. Jan Willem Goudriaan, EPSU general secretary, and Guillaume Durivaux, energy policy officer, took part.
