The proposed merger between GDF the publicly-owned gas company and the Suez private utility company has been attacked by unions. They are not only concerned about the threat to jobs but what the merger implies for the future of French and European energy policy and the future status of the electricity company EDF. The FNEM-FO federation called on its members to strike on 7 March and join the demonstrations on 7 March in protest at the new employment laws and make them also a protest against the Suez-GDF merger.

Threat to jobs interrupts pay negotiations
Public service unions in Austria have interrupted their annual pay negotiations with the government. The unions are angry over the threat to 15,667 jobs at federal, regional and local level as a result of government reforms. Ambulance workers demonstrate over threat to jobs
Over 100 ambulance workers in 35 vehicles took part in a demonstration in the Hague over the future of the sector. From 2011 ambulance services will be provided on a regional basis and employers will have to apply for licences to provide services. The four trade unions in the sector are worried about the implications for the collective agreement, employment security and quality of services. The demonstrators handed in a petition to the employers signed by 1200 employees - just over a third of the total of 3500 in the sector. Government threat to 30% of public sector jobs
(November 2016) EPSU has written a letter to the prime minister of Armenia to protest at plans to cut up to 30% of jobs in the public services. The letter also criticises the government for failing to carry out any consultation with trade unions on the planned restructuring. EPSU argues that the planned cuts will not resolve the economic problems facing the country and calls on the government to consult with all stakeholders.
