Health unions suspend industrial action

Health unions in England have agreed to suspend industrial action while they consult their members over a new offer from the Ministry of Health. Ten unions had planned to take action from 29 January, including both strikes and working-to-rule. It would have been the third round of action since last October. Unions are still looking at the detail of the new offer but it includes a 1% increase for all workers with changes to the bottom of the pay scale that would mean increase of 5.6% and 3.1% for the lowest paid. The dispute affects staff mainly in England but the strike planned by some staff in Northern Ireland did go ahead as the unions there didn't receive a commitment that they would get the same offer.

Nurses suspend industrial action

Trade unions representing psychiatric nurses have suspended their industrial action until they have a chance to ballot their members over a revised package of compensation covering violence at work. The Health Service Executive has extended the original scheme and increased compensation levels. It is also looking at compensation for psychological trauma and once its proposals are known the unions will decide whether to recommend the new scheme to members. School secretaries suspend industrial action to return to talks

Following the strike action by school secretaries on 10 January and subsequent industrial action (work-to-rule), Forsa their trade union has agreed to return to talks with the government that are being held by the Workplace Relations Committee conciliation service. The strike action is over the poor pay and conditions suffered by around 2000 school secretaries employed on precarious contracts by local schools (see last issue of EPSU Collective Bargaining News). Forsa is looking for real and significant progress in the talks otherwise the industrial action will re-start.

Unions suspend industrial action over dismissal law changes

Public and private sector trade unions have suspended their industrial action in protest at planned changes to dismissal legislation following a commitment from the government to negotiate. The proposed changes would have made it easier to sack workers in small firms. Unions were objecting to the discriminatory provisions and to the failure to negotiate. The unions have only suspended the action and may restart it if the government doesn't undertake proper tripartite negotiations.
