Unions across the public sector have warned the government of the possibility of all-out strike action unless it negotiates a deal over planned changes to pay and cuts in jobs. The government is responding to demands from the International Monetary Fund to reduce public spending and reform public sector pay as part of a loan package that was also negotiated with the European Union. The Sed Lex civil service union oragnised a demonstration outside parliament on 16 September and is gearing up for a public sector wide strike on 5 October.

Warning strikes across the public sector
Around 130,000 workers from different parts of the federal government and across local government will be involved in strikes this week following the first round of negotiations on pay. Ver.di and other unions had put forward a 6.5% pay claim (with minimum increase of €200) but the employers not only failed to make an offer but asked the unions to withdraw their claim. The warning strikes are aimed to show the employers the strength of feeling of workers as the next negotiations were taking place on 12 and 13 March. Local government union warns of strike action
The GDG-KMSfB local and regional government union has taken a decision to authorise strike action following the refusal of the regional government in Lower Austria to negotiate over pay. The union has criticised Erwin Pröll, the regional government head, for effectively imposing a real wage cut on workers and for ignoring the 3000 demonstrators who joined a union protest back in September. The GDG says it has run out of patience waiting for a response from Pröll and is calling for fair negotiations over a reasonable pay rise for regional government employees for 2013 and 2014. Warning strikes in private waste sector
Private waste sector workers around Germany have been involving in warning strikes in protest at the pay offer from the BDE private waste employers’ organisation. Services union ver.di has condemned the offer which effectively means no increase covering an eight-month period and then a rise of 1% in 2011. Read more at > ver.di (DE)
