NHS pay negotiations won't be re-opened

Trade union demands to re-open negotiations over National Health Service (NHS) pay have been rejected by the Pay Review Body, the independent organisation responsible for recommending NHS pay increases to the government. Unions had called for the three-year deal to be re-negotiated in the light of the 2.75% increase for 2008 that had been rapidly overtaken by inflation that reached 5% by the summer. The Unite trade union is still in dispute over the three-year agreement. It organised a day of industrial action on 3 December and is meeting to discuss what further action might follow in 2009.

Health service unions want to re-open negotiations

Health sector trade unions have called on the employers to re-open negotiations in the light of soaring inflation and major problems in the labour market for health workers. Workers in the National Health Service are covered by a three-year deal running from April 2008 to March 2011. Unions are not only concerned about inflation at a 16-year high but have also presented detailed evidence of a sharp increase in the numbers of student nurses quitting their courses and the upcoming surge in retirement across a range of key NHS jobs. Union says it won't negotiate new national agreement

Public service union IMPACT has warned its members that it won’t be possible to negotiate a new national agreement because of the government’s refusal to agree to three key requirements. The union has demanded guarantees that there will be no further reductions in public service pay or in the value of public service pensions, nor taxation of the pensions lump sum. It also called for an agreed protocol on public service employment issues. The union’s executive was due to meet on 24 July to plan a campaign of action to resist any further attempts by the government to attack pay and conditions.
