Unions call for action on working conditions

Public sector unions had talks earlier this month with the Ministry for the Public Service over working conditions with a particular emphasis on health and safety. The view of the CFDT put the focus on health and safety and argued that there is adequate protection in existing European and national legislation but that the challenge was to ensure these were applied across the public sector. The union also argued against including the issue of employing older workers within the general discussions on working conditions. UNSA also raised key health and safety issues calling for more action on prevention particularly regarding muscular-skeletal and psychological disorders. The union criticised the government for failing to organise a central health and safety committee meeting so far in 2008.

ETUC calls for strengthening of working conditions directive

On 20 December the European Commission published is draft directive on transparent and predictable working conditions to replace the Written Statement Directive. The initial response from the ETUC is to welcome the requirement on employers to provide information to workers on day one and to extend this right to a range of atypical workers. There are also positive measures related to training, prohibition periods, protection of trade union reps and the rights of flexible workers. Union calls for better working conditions to tackle labour shortage

The vida public services trade union has called for better employment and working conditions in the care sector to tackle labour shortages. It highlights the problems of long hours, changing shift patterns and low pay that are making it difficult to recruit. The union has called for improved funding for the sector in contrast to employer organisations who have called for care professions to be included in the skilled worker regulations that control which categories of non-EU workers can enter the country.
