The state sector union ROTAL and the EAKL union federation are continuing their efforts to achieve a reform of the pay system in the civil service. They highlight the fact that the government has not kept to previous agreements, that it unilaterally increases salaries of different categories of civil servants at different times and that there is a growing gap between the highest and lowest paid civil servants.

In reaction to news that £40 million (€47.2m) was distributed as performance-related bonuses in the Ministry of Defence alone, the union argues that this should be distributed more fairly among all workers. Government plans cuts to civil service redundancy scheme
The PCS civil service union may return to the courts to defend the current redundancy compensation scheme. The union won two court rulings against the previous government that had tried to change the scheme without proper negotiation. Despite those rulings, the new coalition government is pushing through legislation to cut the scheme. PCS is also challenging the government’s claims about the scheme, arguing that it has exaggerated the levels of compensation by focusing on the maximum payments for those with the longest service.
