The STAL union has said it will consider further demonstrations and possible strike action from September if the government proves determined to push through the planned cuts in public spending which threaten public sector workers' pay and conditions and retirement rights.

Transport dispute resolved
A strike by bus and lorry drivers was ended earlier this month with a new agreement which will see pay increase by 6% over two years. The agreement runs until January 2008 and covers around 30,000 workers including those employed by SITA the waste disposal contractor. Border guards' dispute resolved
