Unions issue joint reaction to government attack on civil service

Public service unions have been angered by negative comments from government ministers on the civil service and public service workers. They have responded with a joint letter which says that repeating old clichés only undermines attempts to have a constructive social dialogue and painting the civil service in bad light is counterproductive when the priority should be to make it more attractive to help address staff shortages. The letter says that the proposed legislation on the civil service was not wanted by the unions and doesn’t address the concerns of public service workers. The unions reiterate the need to respond urgently to their demands for a general increase in salaries and wages, in particular by raising the index point that is the basis for calculating public sector salaries. Along with wage bargaining, the unions also want negotiations on career development and underline that there can be no change in the civil service without a genuine process of consultation and negotiation.
