Firefighters demand legislation to improve employment conditions

Firefighters’ trade unions, including the SDSLN, organised a rally in Zagreb on 6 May, under the banner "Falsehoods Don't Douse Fires”. This was a platform to address enduring grievances about the professional status and rights of firefighters across local and county jurisdictions. The protest was initiated following announcements about the closure of firefighting units due to financial constraints. Emphasizing the delayed implementation of crucial legislative measures since their mandated deadline in 2020, firefighters are calling on government authorities and the Chief Fire Commander for immediate action. Central demands include standardizing remuneration frameworks across firefighting service tiers and augmenting decentralized financial allocations for firefighting tasks. Along with the rally, a convoy of some 70 firefighting vehicles traversed city streets, symbolically sounding sirens in solidarity.
