Day of action and strikes set for 17 May

Portugal

Local government union STAL and other public service unions in the Frente Comum are planning a day of action and strikes on 17 May to push for their key collective bargaining demands for 2024 and against moves by the government towards privatisation and the undermining of industrial relations in public services. The unions warn that the centre-right government, while reducing taxes for businesses, is looking to cut services, pin back public sector pay and increase working hours, with a set of policies reminiscent of the austerity imposed in the early 2010s. The unions’ demands include a €1000-a-month minimum salary in the public sector, improvements to career development and training and measures to reduce precarious employment conditions.
