Pay campaigns in health and justice

Croatia

The recent campaign of protests by the HSSMS-MT and SSZSSH health unions, “We are health care”, led to a meeting with the government to discuss pay and how to ensure that nurses and other health workers do not lose out in comparison to doctors and other health professionals. The government’s promise that a new pay agreement in 2024 would resolve the issue was not enough to convince the unions who said that they cannot wait until next year to see progress. Further negotiations are now planned. Meanwhile, the SDLSN trade union has called for mediation over its claim for a €400 pay increase for staff in the Ministry of Justice. The union argues that there has been a longstanding demand for higher pay for workers in the ministry and that it hasn’t ruled out strike action if mediation fails to deliver.

Pay and bargaining progress for health and justice workers

The CITUB trade union confederation reports that workers in regional health inspectorates and emergency medical centres have seen substantial salary increases from the beginning of December. Regional health inspection staff have seen pay rise by up to 30% while emergency medical staff are getting around 22%. Unions have been organising a series of protests over pay since the autumn. Health, care and justice workers mobilise

The FP-CGIL, CISL-FP, UIL-FPL and UIL-PA public service federations are mobilising their members in protests in two sectors – health and social care and the justice ministry. The national health and social care protest on 29 October will be calling for increased funding, more jobs and better pay and conditions. The unions argue that it is all very well for the EU-backed national reform and resilience plans to support investment in new facilities, but the challenge will be to find the workers to staff them. Strike in justice ministry over pay levels

Spain

The FSC-CCOO and FeSP-UGT trade union federations, along with other unions, are taking strike action on 3 December across the ministry of justice. The unions argue that the government has reneged on two key elements of an agreement reached in September that set out to ensure that pay levels across the ministry were the same as for staff employed by the autonomous regions. The agreement also included a commitment to payments of between €80 and €190 a month (backdated to 1 January 2021) as compensation to those on the lower pay levels.
