Union demands measures to tackle violence in psychiatric homes

The FOA trade union reports that data from the Danish Working Environment Authority shows a record number of offences in psychiatric homes in 2022 where staff were not adequately protected against violence. There were 92 cases, up from 73 in 2021, representing the highest figure since records began. FOA says this reflects a picture of everyday violence that is unacceptable for both staff and patients. Overall, there were 482 accidents at work due to violence in psychiatric institutions in 2022, a 37% increase since 2019. FOA is critical of governments that have promised action over the years but have failed to deliver. The union has presented its plan for the sector with proposals on patient care and education and training of employees and will increase its pressure on government for concrete action.

Union condemns staff lock-out by psychiatric hospital

Health and services union ver.di has criticized the action of the Lippe Mental Hospital in Bad Salzuflen over its decision to lock-out qualified staff and take on unqualified agency workers in their place. The workers at the hospital have been on strike to negotiate a collective agreement which has been rejected by the hospital’s owner, Alexander Spernau. Most of the comparable hospitals in the surrounding region pay their employees €250-€400 than those employed by Spernau, who even rejected proposals to resolve the dispute from the regional mediation office. Call for convention to tackle violence against women

EPSU has joined with the PSI, ETUC, ITUC and other labour movement organisations in calling for an International Labour Organisation Convention against gender-based violence at the workplace. The call comes on the United Nations’ International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which takes place on 25 November every year. A draft text is under discussion and could be agreed at the ILO conference next year although the ETUC has concerns that some European governments are trying to get the text watered down.

Psychiatric nurses give notice that they will step up industrial action

Members of the Psychiatric Nurses Association and the SIPTU general union are taking industrial action in protest at the Health Services Executive's refusal to improve compensation for psychiatric nurses injured as a result of assaults at work. The nurses' action so far has involved an overtime ban and work-to-rule from 30 April and the next stage is to refuse to co-operate any more with redeployment of nurses from community services to psychiatric and general hospitals.
