The vida trade union and the Chamber of Doctors have begun negotiations with the church-based hospitals in the Carinthia region to update the collective agreement covering around 1600 workers. The first bargaining round took place on 2 August and negotiations will resume on 29 September. The agreement has not been properly updated for 30 years and the union is pushing for major revisions that will improve pay and conditions and make work in the sector more attractive. The union has set out over 40 areas of potential revision covering working time, leave arrangements, sabbaticals and training. One of the main aims will be to move to a 35-hour week without loss of pay.

Excessive workloads and unpredictable hours will feature prominently in the childcare sector negotiations that began on 8 November. With a slogan that "we're not jacks of all trades" the FNV trade union highlighted the problem that childcare workers were overburdened with cleaning, administrative and other tasks rather than child care itself. The union will be looking for restrictions on the extent to which employers can ask childcare workers to change their working time at short notice. The main pay claim will be for a 3.5% pay rise for the 80000 workers in the sector.
Ver.di and the Marburger Bund doctors’ union acknowledge the initial progress that has been made in negotiations with the Oldenburg hospital run by the Protestant Church. The unions are aiming for a general pay increase from 1 January 2012 along with some changes to the framework collective agreement in line with developments in the public sector. Services union ver.di, along with the GEW teaching union and GKD church trade union, has negotiated a new collective agreement with the protestant church covering the Berlin, Brandenburg and Oberlausitz region. Apart from one other regional church, this is the only collective agreement negotiated between the unions and the church.
