The three trade union confederations – ACV/CSC, ABVV/FBTG and ACLVB/CGLSB – have launched a petition on pay with the aim of securing 25000 signatures and getting a debate in parliament. The confederations want to see changes to legislation that impose restrictions on the scope for negotiating pay rises. They argue that the current system leaves little room for manoeuvre and means that increasing inflation is eating rapidly into workers’ purchasing power. The unions want to ensure that the current system of indexation is maintained and also to allow for the right to negotiate on pay at all levels.

Five of the main public services trade unions have come together in campaign over pay and launched a petition calling for an end to the erosion of workers' purchasing power. The unions argue that this year's pay increases (0.5% on 1 July and 1% on 1 November) will again mean a cut in real pay and they want an increase of at least 1.8% in 2007 to compensate for forecast inflation. The unions also want a revision of the public sector pay scale and increases to compensate for the loss of purchasing power since 2000. Younion, representing municipal workers in Austria has launched a petition calling for support for childcare workers in the Lower Austria region. The union highlights the significant increase in responsibilities and workloads for these workers and the key demands being put forward are: improvements in the quality and quantity of education; more opportunities for training and further education; creation of a clear career path; and pay in line with the demands of the job. EPSU has also collected together news of other recent initiatives by childcare unions.
GDF-SUEZ petitionThe five trade unions that organise in the GDF-SUEZ energy company - CGT, FO, CFDT, CFE-CGC and CFTC - have launched a petition over the company's imposition of a below-inflation pay increase (0.3%) and its decision to reduce the proportion of staff promoted to higher grades. The unions want to re-open negotiations on these two points as well as get a commitment from the company that it won't undertake any plans involving job cuts or any initiatives that undermine the IEG sector agreement.
