Unions mobilise psychologists over pay, jobs and contracts

A national strike and local demonstrations by psychologists took place on 28 September following earlier action in June. The workers’ trade unions have a range of demands related to pay, jobs and the statutory/contractual position of psychologists and government proposals on their status, independence and payment for consultations. Psychologists have seen demands for their services increase significantly during the pandemic and the unions argue that this needs to be recognised in terms of more jobs, better employment conditions and similar pay improvements as awarded to other health and social care workers.

Public sector unions mobilise over jobs and pay

Public sector federations called a national day of action on 15 May including strikes and demonstrations to protest against the government's continuing pay freeze and other austerity measures. The unions continue to call for major reforms of public sector pay and are angry that the government plans to freeze the index on which public sector pay is based until 2017. The unions' demands include better conditions for contractual workers, equal pay for men and women and action on mobility and career development. EPSU sent a solidarity message. Unions mobilise over pay, jobs and lost rights

The public service federations of the CCOO and UGT confederations organised a joint mobilisation of public administration workers on 29 November as part of their campaign for increased pay, more jobs and a return of rights lost during austerity. This followed a public-sector wide demonstration on 24 November with plans for further action on 14 December. The unions argue that services are under threat as 14% of jobs have been cut and reduced recruitment has created an ageing workforce where half are over 50. Since the 5% pay cut in 2010 there has been only a single pay increase of 1% while

Health unions mobilise over pay, jobs and funding

Switzerland

The vpod/ssp trade union is mobilising for a national demonstration of health workers in Berne on 30 October. The aim of the protest is to highlight the efforts and sacrifices that health workers have made in responding to the COVID-19 crisis. Key demands include a COVID bonus but also action to deal with the long-standing problems of pay and understaffing in the sector. The union is also calling for measures to improve training, work-life balance and retirement provision and argues that pay increases should reflect the arduousness of many health workers’ jobs.
