Public sector strike leads to meeting with ministers

The strike across public health and administration on 9 December has led to an important breakthrough with meetings between public service union federation leaders and ministers. The unions underlined the need for an emergency recruitment plan to improve service quality and address the problems created by a 15-year freeze on recruitment. The unions also want to see action to reduce precarious employment and to boost skills and training. Along with a strengthening of safety protocols the unions are also looking at negotiating pay improvements in new collective agreements.

Union calls warning strikes in lead up to next regional negotiations

Public services union ver.di is mobilising its members in regional government for a series of warning strike in the lead up to the third round of bargaining which begins on 28 February. The union says that there was no breakthrough in the second round of negotiations. The main demands are for a 6% pay increase for the 2.3 million employees with a minimum rise of EUR 200 over a 12-month period. The union also wants specific structural pay increases in care and IT, with an extra EUR 300 on the pay table covering care workers to help tackle recruitment problems. Strike threat leads to partial victory

(March 2017) A strike threat by 10,000 support workers was called off following concessions from health service management. A key victory won by the SIPTU trade union was agreement to start a process of job evaluatoin for support workers. The issue of pay increments for interns would be dealt with in the forthcoming public sector pay negotiations. There was no movement on ensuring that support workers get the same concessions as nursing staff in emergency services but SIPTU said it would continue to pursue this through the labour courts.

Strike action leads to negotiations

After seven days of strike action and several demonstrations public sector workers in Geneva canton have managed to get the authorities back to the negotiating table. The canton had threatened to increase working hours, increase part-time employment, freeze recruitment and reduce redundancy rights as part of a raft of measures to cut public spending. These measures are now on hold at least until 21 March during which time negotiations over the proposed budget cuts will take place.
