As the trend towards public sector pay cuts began to take hold across Europe, EPSU decided it was important to monitor the impact of those cuts and the way they were being implemented. Two major reports produced by the Labour Research Department set out not just the facts and figures in 10 countries where cuts were imposed but also provide case studies to show what those cuts have meant for individual public sector workers.

Early responses to the EPSU survey on the gender pay gap show that affiliates have used a range of methods to try to reduce the gap. In Sweden equal pay legislation has been important in local government while in the Netherlands a job evaluation system in the health service has contributed to securing higher pay for care workers. In other countries, such as Estonia, there is still a basic problem about getting statistics on men and women’s average pay. EPSU needs a lot more information from affiliates to get a comprehensive picture of the situation across Europe and report to the standing
The FP-CGIL, UIL FPL and UIL PA public sector federations have come together to produce data on public sector employment and pay. The aim is to try to counter much of the anti-public sector propaganda that has emerged in recent years. The data is included in a powerpoint presentation that looks at pay trends, overall public sector pay spending as a percentage of GDP and in relation to population. The figures show Italy as comparable with EU averages and other countries and that negotiated pay increases since 2000 have lagged behind inflation by 7.6%. [Read more at FP-CGIL (IT)->http://www
