The three main federations representing firefighters have announced a day's strike action on 18 June (postponed from 5 June). The unions are protesting over a range of issues including inadequate funding and staffing, pay, recruitment, the regulation of the system of voluntary firefighters and failure to recognise the dangerous and arduous nature of the job in terms of pension entitlement.

Firefighters mobilise over pay, pensions and funding
Firefighters in the FP CGIL public services federation have called a demonstration outside parliament on 17 October. The aim of the protest is to underline the union's pay claim in the current round of collective bargaining as well as to call for action on a number of other issues including recruitment, pensions and funding.
Firefighters take further strike action over pensions
The FBU firefighters' union has called a 24-hour strike on 12 and a seven-hour stoppage on 21 June in protest at the government's decision to break off negotiations and make unilateral changes to the firefighters' pension scheme. The union will also call for a ban on overtime in between the strikes which will be the 13th and 14th in the dispute over the pension changes that could see firefighters lose pension rights if they are unable to maintain operational fitness until the age of 60. Nurses take action over jobs and funding
Nurses in the SEP and SERAM trade unions took two days of strike action over jobs, pay and conditions and health service funding. The union argues that the austerity measures have led to massive job cuts across the service and that nurses and other medical staff are under extreme pressure to maintain services while also seeing their pay and conditions cut back.
