The ADEDY civil service confederation called for strike action on 29 March over the impact of austerity measures in the health sector. The union says that thousands of workers now lack the constitutionally guaranteed right to health services by the State. Continued cuts and restrictions on drugs and benefits, reductions in funding and the squeeze on budgets are leading to tragic consequences. Hospitals and health units are being merged and closed solely to drastically cut costs and meet the requirements of the Troika and the lenders, without considering the real needs of society for health services.

Unions ballots for strike action over health job cuts
IMPACT is balloting its 25,000 members in the health service over possible industrial action in protest at new restrictions on staffing in the health service. Local health service organisations no longer have discretion to replace workers who have resigned or who go on maternity leave. This can now only be authorised by a central unit. The union is also planning a special conference on 7 February to debate a range of pressures facing the health service including cuts in jobs and accelerating privatisation. Two-day strike over job cuts
The FNME-CGT, FO-FNEM and CFTC unions in the energy sector have called for two days of strike action on 21-22 January to protest at plans by the SNET energy company, owned by the Germany energy multinational EON, to close coal-fired power stations and cut 535 jobs by 2015. The unions want commitments to prolong the life of some power stations and to investigate the conversion of others while also confirming investment in new biomass initiatives.
Doctors strike over budget cuts
A national strike by doctors took place on Monday 19 July in protest at government plans to cut health budgets. Doctors’ unions warned that the cuts will mean 30,000 fewer doctors in four years’ time while the number of fixed-term workers will be slashed.
