The ETUC and EPSU have expressed their support for the actions by trade unions in the North of Cyprus to block the privatisation of the energy sector. Strike action was declared on 19 January and a major demonstration is planned for 30 January. The privatisation is seen as part of the government’s austerity measures.

Union takes further action against outsourcers
Central government union PCS organised a fifth week of action against outsourcing company Interserve which provides services for the Foreign Office. The core of the dispute is over union recognition. Meanwhile, the union also organised a five-day strike by cleaners employed by the ISS multinational which has a contract with the tax and revenue service (HMRC) on Merseyside in north west England.
Campaign against privatisation contiinues
Members of the PCS civil service union have marked their 100th day of industrial action at the National Gallery in central London. Their long-running campaign is against the privatisation of visitor services at the Gallery as well as reinstatement of a leading shop steward who was sacked during the dispute. The strikers have received support from across the trade union movement. The new Gallery director has met the union for talks and further meetings are planned. Strike planned over jobs and privatisation
Members of the PCS civil service union are planning a day of strike action on 26 July as part of their continuing campaign against job cuts and privatisation. The workers involved will be from the Border Agency, Identity and Passport Service and Criminal Records Bureau. Read more at > PCS
