The FOA has welcomed the setting up of a commission to examine home care provision. The union argues strongly that the quality and dignity of care need to be at the centre of the commission’s considerations. Above all FOA will be urging the commission to take full account of the contribution of thousands of health and social care professionals to the quality of home care and shift the focus away from the obsession with cutting costs that has been the primary approach of many municipalities in recent years.

Municipal union welcomes initiative on nursing home staffing
Local government union Kommunal is pleased by the decision of the parliamentary social affairs committee to call for guidelines and minimum levels of staffing in nursing homes. However, the union emphasises that the important thing is to ensure that these standards will be applied in practice in both municipal and private care homes. It also wants to ensure that employees in private homes have the right to blow the whistle if they find companies failing to meet the standards. Unions agree protective equipment guidance in care homes and home care
Trade unions, including FNV and NU'91, have agreed a set of guidelines on the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) for workers in nursing homes and those providing home care. This comes after union concern that existing guidance was unclear and created to confusion at the workplace. The unions and employers are also working together to ensure that there is sufficient PPE available not just to ensure that the guidance is applied in practice but also to provide for those workers who ask for PPE in other circumstances. Collective bargaining over the VVT nursing home and home care agreement will resume on 14 September following informal talks between the unions and employers over the summer period. Both sides think that there is now scope for an agreement with a key point being provisions on age-related working time to improve work-life balance.
