The ADEDY civil service confederation is supporting the general strike called for 11 May. Trade unions continue to oppose the austerity measures being imposed by the Greek government in response to demands from the International Monetary Fund and European Union. ADEDY argues that far from resolving the crisis the cuts in public sector pay and cuts in jobs are increasing unemployment and deepening the recession.

The ADEDY public sector and GSEE private sector confederations have agreed to joint action on 20 May in the latest protest at the cuts being pushed through by the Greek government in accordance with demands from the European Commission and International Monetary Fund. The unions are focusing in particular on cuts to pensions and social security highlighting the fact that a major problem has been previous government failure to tackle the high levels of undeclared work that had reduced the level of contributions into the system. The CGIL trade union confederation is organising a general strike on 6 May with a set of 12 key demands. These include calls for changes to taxation and public finance, measures to deal with precarious employment and the opening of negotiations in the public sector where the government has frozen pay and said there will no negotiations for three years. Public administration union STAL is following three days' of action in April with a national demonstration planned for 19 May in Lisbon. The 10, 11 and 12 of April saw the union organise vigils outside the head offices of the minister for local administration, the finance minister and then on 12 April outside the prime minister's office. The campaign continues to focus on opposition to government cuts in public spending and defence of the pay and conditions of public service workers. The union will also be launching a national publicity campaign to alert people to the threat to public services
