The Unite and Unison municipal unions have stepped up their industrial action at Southampton City Council in the South East England. The council wants to impose pay cuts and a pay freeze and its threatening to sack over 4,000 employees and re-employ them on contracts with poorer pay and conditions.

Unions continue to protest over pay cuts
Over one year after their dispute began, the Unite and UNISON trade unions are maintaining their industrial action campaign in protest at pay cuts imposed by Southampton City Council. At a recent meeting the unions agreed to continue action short of a strike, to organise a lobby of the council on 15 February and to plan for a major demonstration and strike action in April. Protests over public sector pay cuts continue

Strikes continue over Geneva's cuts package
Trade unions representing employees of the Geneva canton, including EPSU affiliate VPOD/SSP, have taken further strike action against the authority's proposed cuts package. The unions are protesting not just against planned job and pay cuts and increase working hours but also on the social impact of the budget cuts for Geneva's citizens. Around 10000 people joined a demonstration against the austerity measures earlier this month and a further rally followed on 15 December.
