Unions respond to business leader's attack on civil servants

Juan Rosell, head of the CEOE employers’ organisation, has angered unions with his statements about civil servants, describing them as arrogant and unreliable. The unions have responded by referring to the fact that civil servants have played an important role in response to the crisis, pointing out that not only were they not responsible for the crisis but they didn’t benefit from the boom years that lead to the bust. While inflation averaged 4%, civil servants’ pay was increasing by an average of 2% over a period of more than 10 years. And following the slump civil servants have had a 5% pay cut and pay freeze imposed upon them.

ver.di attacks 41-hour week for federal civil servants

Frank Bsirske, chair of the ver.di services union, has attacked government plans to increase weekly hours for 300,000 federal civil servants to 41 a week and to cut special payments. This follows only shortly after the new agreement for federal employees came into effect with a 39-hour week and retention of some special payments. From verdi's viewpoint the negotiations were on the basis that the conditions would also apply to civil servants who don't have the right to collective bargaining. Unions respond to attack on fringe benefits

EPSU has sent a solidarity message to Hungarian affiliates who are fighting against their government's new proposal to reform the taxation of certain fringe benefits. The KKDSZ, BDDSZ and HVDSZ2000 trade unions held a press conference in front of the Parliament earlier this month in protest. The reform of the taxation of fringe benefits such as luncheon vouchers would make it more costly for employers to provide these to their workers. This could result in an effective cut in income for many, with a particular impact on the low paid for whom the vouchers are very important.
