Both the CCOO and UGT trade union organisations are calling for increased action to deal with gender inequality at work and the latest data that show an increase in the gender pay gap in Spain. The statistics reveal how women make up just over 64% of all low-paid workers and predominate in low-paying sectors like health and social services where they make up 69% of the workforce. The CCOO want to see action to deal with discrimination in terms of job classification, recruitment, promotion and training. The UGT emphasizes the importance of tackling gender inequality through collective bargaining and ensuring that there is an increase in the number of women negotiators.

Federation targets gender pay gap
On 16 April the FSP-UGT public services federation organised a workshop to promote a range of tools to reduce the gender pay gap. The workshop was aimed at union activists involved in collective bargaining to encourage them to include specific measures in their collective agreements to address pay inequality. The initiative is in a response to the findings of a recent report by the UGT confederation which revealed that, for the first time, some parts of the public services are registering a large gender pay gap than the national average. Gender pay gap widens in federal government
The VPÖD public service union has expressed concern about the latest statistics that show a widening of the gender pay gap among lower pay federal government workers. While there is some evidence of the pay gap narrowing among higher pay workers, the gap at lower levels rose from 6.7% in 2006 to 9.3% in 2008. Figures for local and cantonal (regional) government are not yet available but there past evidence has revealed a wider pay gap than at federal level.
