The KESK public sector federation has announced a day’s strike action on 21 December in support of a range of important demands. These include affirming the right to strike in a collective agreement, job security and decent pay, equal pay for work of equal value, an end to the commercialization of public services, an increase in the minimum wage and an end to unfair arrests and intimidation of trade unionists.

The ADEDY public sector confederation joined the GSEE private sector confederation in strike action on 10 December in protest at a range of government policies including cuts to pensions and undermining legal rights to collective agreements. The strike caused widespread disruption across the country which was still being hit by a wave of protests over the shooting of a student by police. The FSP-UGT has just published a detailed report looking at developments in public services over the past four years. "Reduced public services, fewer rights and fewer jobs" provides details on the cuts in services in terms of both quality and coverage that have been the result of policies imposed by the government. Jobs have been slashed across the public sector with nearly 75000 gone from the autonomous regions, 40952 from local government, 41399 from central government and even 27848 from health services when most other countries are increasing employment in health. The Fp-Cgil, Cisl-FP, Uil-Fpl and Uil-Pa public service federations are mobilising for the national strike on 9 December. The unions say that years of recruitment freezes have created staff shortages and mean that public services need around 500000 extra workers. The unions are also calling for action to increase permanent employment with around 170000 workers on precarious contracts.
