The ICTU confederation has called a national demonstration for 27 November in protest at what is expected to be another austerity budget with major cuts in public spending. ICTU general secretary David Begg said: "We have had three austerity budgets but we are in a worse position than when the process started.” Unions argue in particular that those on low incomes will be hit hard, particularly with a potential cut in the minimum wage.

Confederations plan protests against austerity budget
The three confederations are coordinating a series of protests and strikes against the new government's proposed austerity budget. The union argue that the budget is socially unjust, with workers' paying the price and no attempt to get the wealthy and high-paid to make a large contribution. Unions are concerned about the threat to the wage indexation system, the scope to negotiate pay increases and plans to increase the retirement age to 67. The CMKOZ trade union confederation is organising a national demonstration on 21 April in protest at government austerity measures that include cuts to pensions, public sector jobs and higher VAT. The confederation is working to get broad support for the demonstration from pensioners, patients, the unemployment and civil society.
