Industrial action threatened over waste privatisation

The SIPTU trade union agreed to talks at the Labour Relations Commission over a dispute over privatisation but says its members working for Dun Laoghaire council, just to the South East of Dublin, may still take industrial action. The union is angry that the council decided unilaterally to outsource the waste service to a company called Panda. This is not just counter to earlier agreements on outsourcing in the public sector but also to the commitment in the recent national Croke Park agreement to maintain direct labour.

Waste workers threatened strike action over outsourcing

The SIPTU members at South Dublin County Council have voted for strike action in protest at the council’s unilateral decision to privatize the waste collection service. The unions says that it has been working with management over improvements to the service and the council’s decision is in conflict with the national Croke Park agreement and earlier national agreements that give priority to using in-house labour. Union threatens industrial action over dismissal law change

The JHL public services union has warned that it will start a campaign of industrial action if the government goes ahead with plans to change the law on dismissal. The union leadership agreed that it would consider action short of a strike (such as an overtime ban) and even targeted strike action. The government is working on proposals that would make it easier to dismiss workers in companies with fewer than 20 employees which would cover 36% of all employees. Unions threaten legal action over pay rises

Public sector unions, including state sector union SDLSN, have threatened to go to the courts if the new government does not honour an agreement to implement pay increases 4%, 8% or 10% based on years of services. The previous government did not pay any increases in 2015 in response to the pressure on public finances but they were expected in 2016 with a return to economic growth. The new government is asking unions to be patient while it sorts out funding for the current year as current financial plans do not include provisions for the increases for the whole year.
