The CGIL confederation organized a national strike on 25 June with its members in the private sector called out for a four-hour stoppage while the FP-CGIL public sector federation organized a 24-hour strike in the public sector. The confederation estimates that over a million people joined demonstrations around the country in protest against the government’s planned spending cuts that include a three-year pay freeze for public sector workers and cuts in productivity payments.

National demonstration against austerity measures
Thousands of people joined the national protest in Lisbon on 19 March organised by the CGTP-IN confederation. The demonstration brought together unions from both public and private sectors. The unions will follow this up 1 April, National Youth Day, with action focusing in particular on youth unemployment. Union warns of strike action over austerity measures
The vpod public services union says that it is considering industrial action if the Bern cantonal (regional) government goes ahead with a package of severe cuts. The union says that 600 jobs are under threat including many jobs in health and social services. The Canton's workforce is also facing cuts in pay. Vpod will be discussing its response with the employees and the institutions that are affected, highlighting the serious impact that these cuts will have on the quantity and quality of services to citizens.
