On 21 January the public services federations and unions, CGT, FSU and Solidaires, organised over 130 demonstrations and meetings around the country involving an estimated 100,00 participants. The unions are concerned about government proposals for reform that will affect all three of the main sections of the public services – ministries, local government and health service – and that will mean cuts in jobs and continual refusal by the government to negotiate pay increases and a reform of the public sector pay system.

National demonstration planned over pension reforms
Five union organizations (CFDT, CGT, FSU, Solidaires and UNSA) are mobilizing for a demonstration on 24 June in protest at government plans to increase the retirement age and employees’ pension contributions. The unions argue that the changes will mean that as a result of the various breaks in their careers many women will have to work until the age of 65 to get a full pension. They point out that generally the reforms don’t acknowledge the scale of the gender pensions gap nor the need to take account of difficult and dangerous occupations. Thousands demonstrate over labour reforms and cuts to pensions
Around 50,000 people joined a demonstration in Prague on 21 May organized by the CMKOS confederation in protest at government changes to the labour code and reforms to pensions and the health system. The protest also focused on the government’s failure to participate in a proper process of social dialogue over the reform plans. Read more at > EPSU (EN)
Unions coordinate protest over pensions
Over 2500 workers took part in a national trade union demonstration against a bill to reform the pensions system. The unions are challenging plans to increase the retirement age and reduce benefits. Their counter proposals include a higher basic pension, better working conditions for older workers and measures to help those suffering with health problems or carrying out difficult and arduous jobs.
