NIPSA, the union organising public service workers in Northern Ireland, is calling a significant pay increase for the lowest paid civil servants. As part of its pay claim for 2006 the union wants a minimum flat-rate increase of £3,311 a year while it is looking for a pay rise that will more than compensate for the 8.3% loss in purchasing power suffered by civil servants in recent years.

The Northern Ireland Public Service Alliance (NIPSA) has submitted a claim for an 8.2% pay increase from August this year. The union says that the increase will mean civil service pay will rise in line with average earnings across the whole economy (4.6%) plus compensate for two years of pay deals which have fallen 3.6% below inflation. In line with PCS and Prospect the main unions in the UK civil service, NIPSA is also calling for a £14,000 (21,000 euros) minimum salary. Read more at > NIPSA
The UNISON, Unite and RCN health trade unions have voted to approve a new agreement on pay and staffing in Northern Ireland. The three unions were involved in various forms of industrial action at the end of last year, including the first full strike action in the RCN's history. The unions now have agreement that pay rates in Northern Ireland will be increased to be in line with those in England and measures will be discussed to increase staffing. Thousands of workers across Northern Ireland took industrial action on 13 March in protest over privatisation, job cuts and cuts to health, education and other public services.
