Negotiations to resume over pay and health of social and childcare workers

Ver.di and the local employers’ association VKA will resume negotiations on 16 July to see if they can resolve the dispute involving workers involved in social and childcare. The union has been arguing for a re-grading of the 200,000 workers to acknowledge their increased workloads and responsibilities. It also wants a specific agreement to deal with health issues facing workers. Negotiations broke down last month ver.di rejected what it saw as a wholly inadequate re-grading proposal.

Negotiations resume following equal pay strike

The solidly supported two-day strike by around 8000 local government workers in Glasgow was successful in getting the council back to the negotiating table. The strike was over the council's failure to deal with longstanding demands for equal pay for a wide range of low-paid women workers in care, catering, cleaning, school support and other services. The strike on 23-24 October was called by the GMB and UNISON trade unions and UNISON now reports that initial talks with the council have been positive and constructive. EPSU, PSI and many affiliates sent messages of support.

Health workers strike as talks resume

Around 10000 health workers took 24-hour strike action on 26 June to put pressure on the ministry of health to act on the results of a major job evaluation exercise. Many workers - including those involved in portering, household and catering services and employed as health care assistants, maternity care assistants, laboratory aides, chefs and surgical instrument technicians - have been waiting for their job and pay to be upgraded but the government has stalled on implementing the job evaluation.
