Minister makes no concessions to union demands on pay

Public service trade unions were very disappointed following a meeting with minister Eric Woerth on 25 June. Woerth simply reaffirmed the government’s commit to pay general salary increases of 0.5% (1.7.09) and 0.3% (1.10.09) this year with a further 0.5% next year. Unions have been looking for a much higher overall increase to compensate for several years when pay rises have fallen behind inflation. Woerth said bonuses and other payments would ensure higher increases for civil servants. The union response was to reiterate their call for a general, guaranteed increase rather than individualising pay in this way. They also want a reform of the public sector pay system. The minister further angered unions by saying that planned job cuts across the public sector would free more money for those civil servants who keep their jobs.

Employers make concessions after "final" offer

After union members in the waste and environment sector overwhelmingly rejected the employers’ “final” offer of a 1% pay increase, a further improved offer was made. The 1% pay increase backdated to 1 June will stand but a further increase will be paid if inflation rises above 1% at the end of the year. Abvakabo had indicated that it was willing to be flexible on pay if the employers would make some guarantees on jobs and discussions on employment in the sector are continuing.
