The third round of negotiations between unions and employers in regional government failed to produce any progress with ver.di categorically rejecting the employer’s 4.2% pay offer. The increase was only to have been implemented in July 4.2% and the employers want a two-year agreement. Ver.di said it effectively meant 18 months of no pay increase. The union wants an 8% pay increase with a minimum rise of €200 a month, arguing that regional government workers’ pay has fallen behind after years of below-inflation increases or no increases at all. Ver.di will call for a continuation of warning strike activity in the lead up to the next round of negotiations on 28 February.

Ver.di rejects employers' pay offer
Following a second round of pay negotiations covering federal and local government workers, ver.di has rejected the employers' latest offer. The employers claim the deal is the equivalent of a 5% increase on pay but ver.di argues that in fact by the end of 2009 workers would be worse off than they are today. The employers want a two-year deal with increases of 2.5% from 1 February 2008, 1.0% from 1 October 2008 and 0.5% from 1 March 2009. A further 0.5% in each year would be performance-related and so not available to all workers. Ver.di also criticises the offer because the employers want
Union rejects employers' offer on re-grading
The ver.di public services union is campaigning for a major re-grading of the mainly women workers employed in various social, welfare and educational occupations. The union argues that these workers’ occupations have not only been undervalued but their responsibilities and the pressure of work have increased considerably in recent years. In the second round of negotiations on 30 March employer proposals for re-grading were rejected as an outrageous provocation by ver.di which has launched a special website to argue the case for the re-gradings. Unions reject latest employer offer
Unions have broken off negotiations in the energy sector following unsatisfactory pay offers from the employers. The employers had wanted to follow developments in the public sector which would have involved a pay increase of 2.65% plus €11.10 a month. A revised offer from the employers was hardly any different and would have meant pay increases of between 2.9% and 3.25% at a time when inflation is at 3.3%. Read more at > GPA-DJP (DE )
