The three main trade union federations in private health care have called for a national one-day strike in the sector on 18 September. The strike will be the latest stage in the unions' campaign to secure a new collective agreement covering the sector's 150,000 workers. The last agreement expired at the end of December 2005.

Last November unions signed an agreement with the government of the Wallonia region of Belgium that would fund new jobs and better conditions in the non-profit sector covering health and social services. However, employers in the sector have rejected the agreement and now the trade unions (SETCa, CG, CNE, CSC Bâtiment, CGSLB, CASH) have announced plans for strike action beginning on 22 February with a demonstration organised for 23 February. The three main trade union confederations - CGIL, CISL and UIL - have called on the 150,000 workers in the private health sector to strike on 18 September in protest at the continuing failure of the employers to negotiate a new collective agreement. The ADEDY public sector confederation will be joining with the GSEE private sector confederation and other trade union and professional organisations in a 24-hour general strike on 30 May in protest at the continuing austerity being imposed on workers and citizens. ADEDY says that public sector workers are still suffering from pay cuts of up to 40% while more precarious working conditions have spread across the public services and there are critical staff shortages in important areas of health and social services.
