The IMPACT public sector trade union has agreed to high-level talks with the Health Services Executive (HSE) with the aim of ending the three-week old dispute over a recruitment freeze. However, the union has made it clear that it will continue its industrial action that includes a work-to-rule and overtime ban, until the HSE has made concrete steps to end the freeze. The union also wants the Executive to re-affirms its commitment to 40 other existing agreements working conditions.

Unions agree to further talks on local government pensions
The main municipal unions, UNISON and GMB, have agreed to undertake negotiations on changes to the local government pension scheme following commitments from the local government employers and the government. This follows the public sector-wide strike action on pensions on 30 November last year and confusion over the government position just before Christmas. The unions now think there is a reasonable framework for negotiations and that the feared significant short-term increase in employee contribution rates will not now take place. Unions and employers agree to talks on waste sector minimum wage
As from 1 January 2010 employees in the waste sector including street cleaning workers have been covered by a legal sectoral minimum wage set at €8.02 an hour until 31 October 2010. Services union ver.di has won agreement from the BDE private sector employers’ and the VKA municipal employers’ organisations to discuss how to maintain the minimum beyond 31 October 2010. Health union demands talks with government
The TUHSSC health union has called on the government to re-open social dialogue in order to tackle the crisis facing the health service. Hospitals are facing in funding and plans to close thousands of beds while doctors have threatened mass resignations if nothing is done to improve the low levels of pay in the sector. The government is drawing up proposals that include a pay increase for doctors.
