A key element of this year's pay claim from local government unions will be a £1,000 (€1,400) flat-rate pay increase for all workers. This would produce a minimum hourly rate of £6.30 (€9.35) for the sector. The unions are also looking for a standard 35-hour week without loss of pay and minimum paid holiday entitlement of 25 days a year. The current agreement runs until 31 March 2007 and unions this time want a 12-month agreement rather than a three-year deal.

8% pay claim in local and central government
The collective bargaining committee of services union ver.di voted to submit an 8% pay claim in the forthcoming negotiations with employers in local and central government. The union argues that the pay of public sector workers has been eroded by inflation, particularly higher prices for energy, housing and food and this has hit lower paid workers above all. The union is also claiming a minimum €200 increase. Its campaigning material points out that local authorities are now in a much better financial position to afford a decent pay increase. Ver.di wants the pay agreement to run for 12 months
Local government unions submit pay claim
The three main trade union in local government in Scotland have submitted their pay claim for this year and are calling for a minimum wage of £7.20 an hour (€9.00). The unions argue that low paid workers have been hit hard by the public sector pay freeze and local government workers did not even receive the £250 (€312.50) that was paid to workers in other parts of the public sector. The unions are calling for a flat-rate payment of £1000 (€1250), £500 for this year and £500 for last year.
